Middletown, New York based President Container Group (PCG) formally commissioned its third Mitsubishi Evol Flexo Folder Gluer during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its 622,000-square-foot “super plant” on Monday, January 13, with more than 50 employees, customers and invited guests.
“On behalf of the Grossbard family and President Container Group, I want to thank you all for attending this historic event for our company, the ribbon cutting for our third MHI Evol Flexo Folder Gluer. This is really exciting,” said PCG’s Plant Manager Matthew Grossbard, son of company co-owner Larry Grossbard and nephew of co-owner Richard Grossbard, to the applause of those in attendance. Matt Grossbard also thanked PCG employees, the leaders at MHI and several other suppliers and contractors for their machinery, support and services that resulted in a successful installation and startup.
“This is the first major installation I’ve worked on but I couldn’t have done it without the communication and support of a lot of people, especially Pablo Sanchez, our 26-year-old Project Engineer. To do what he has done on this project is truly remarkable,” said Grossbard, who also applauded Richard Goldberg, PCG’s recently retired Vice President of Operations, who worked at the company from 2010-2020 and who was instrumental in the success PCG experiences today. “Although Rich is no longer with us day to day, he remains just a phone call away and is willing to provide us his guidance and support as it is needed.”
“I am proud of everything you have accomplished, Matt, and everything we have accomplished together,” said PCG’s co-owner and president, Larry Grossbard, who shared the dream he and his brother Richard had 15 years ago: to build a manufacturing facility and create a box plant with latest machinery and technology to ensure the company’s success and longevity.
PCG moved its manufacturing operations from New Jersey to New York in 2010, when it employed 143 workers and produced one billion square-feet of corrugated annually. Today, PCG employs 394 workers and produces 2.1 billion square feet annually. “Just as New York delivered on its commitment to us, PCG has not only met but exceeded its commitment to Orange County and the State of New York.
By 2020, PCG accomplished what it set out to do. “Reaching that milestone, however, only inspired us to aim higher,” said Larry Grossbard. “Our new vision was to produce three billion square-feet annually, a volume achieved by very few box plants in America. This required significant investment and we believe the way to be successful is constant investment in your plant, its machinery and its people.”
Over the past five years, PCG expanded its facility by 100,000 square feet, bringing it to 622,000 square feet. It installed a second Fosber 110-inch corrugator, its second Evol, a new Goepfert, and a new Engico Jumbo Flexo Folder Gluer for additional capacity. In 2023, PCG produced 1.9 billion square-feet and set the ambitious goal to grow 10 percent annually year over year for the next three years. In 2024, the company produced a remarkable 2.1 billion square-feet, bringing it to where it is today. Its third Evol will help it achieve its goal.
When asked how the company will be able to achieve such phenomenal production numbers in light of a consolidating industry and plant closures, Grossbard quoted a famous line from the movie, “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner: “If you build it, they will come.”
