Sonoco Products Co. Announces Closure Of RTS Packaging

Hartsville, South Carolina based Sonoco Products Company is closing its packaging plant, RTS Packaging, in Scarborough, Maine, in coming months, according to local media. The plant, which employs about 67 people, manufactures corrugated partitions, folding cartons, sheeted paperboard and die cut paperboard components. It has been in operation in Scarborough under various owners since the 1980s. Sonoco assumed ownership in 1997.

Company spokesperson Roger Schrum said the closure is due to inflation and slumping sales in the folding carton market and that Sonoco is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the plant, its employees and other affected parties, he said. “Sonoco has operations throughout the East Coast and our employees are eligible to seek employment at other company operations where openings may exist,” Schrum said.

Sonoco announced a $70 per ton price increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) in the US and Canada effective April 10. The company said the increase was necessary due to continued inflation and tightening market conditions. Sonoco employs approximately 28,000 people globally. Sonoco also plans to increase prices for all converted paperboard products by at least eight percent starting April 15.
