“Chit Chat with Derek & Cat” officially launches this week, bringing listeners into the world of family businesses — the highs, the lows, and the stories you won’t hear anywhere else. The podcast will share heartfelt, humorous, and often surprising stories behind family-run businesses in Maine and beyond.
Hosted by Catherine Wygant Fossett, Executive Director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB), and Derek Volk, CEO of Volk Packaging Corporation, the podcast gives a heartfelt and humorous look at what makes family businesses thrive.
“We’re telling stories that matter — not just of the businesses, but of the people behind them,” says Catherine. “And that includes our own stories, too.”
The podcast takes a personal approach, weaving in the journeys of both hosts — Catherine and Derek — and their shared passion for helping family businesses succeed. Through their connection with the IFOB, they’ve experienced first-hand how hundreds of businesses navigate growth, succession, and change; and for Derek himself in his own family business. This podcast is an extension of the IFOB mission: to build a community, spark conversations, and offer support through shared experiences.
Family businesses are the heart of Maine’s economy, making up a significant portion of the state’s business landscape (and that of the United States as well). These enterprises keep traditions alive, create jobs, and fuel local economies.
Each week, listeners will hear candid conversations with multi-generational entrepreneurs, legacy leaders, and service providers working behind the scenes. Together, they explore what it takes to keep a family business strong across generations.
“This is about real connection,” said Derek. “We want listeners to feel like they’re part of the family, because in many ways, they are. We’re all learning and growing together.”
