The Ruskin Group's history goes back over 100 years, beginning in 1893 with the Wasser Box Company in Pittsburgh. Originally, the company produced rigid cigar and hat boxes.

Wasser Box merged with Sterling Paper Box, another Pittsburgh company in 1927. The new company expanded into apparel and food packaging, moving to a new plant in Homestead, Pennsylvania.

In 1946, the Ruskin Family, whose box company started in New York in 1913, purchased Sterling-Wasser. The company expanded again into a new location in Jeannette, Pennsylvania.

Throughout the next 4 decades, Sterling continued to expand into new products and markets, through both acquisition and innovation.

In 2001, Sterling embarked on an aggressive new strategy to become the industry leading supplier of packaging and shipping products and services.

The Ruskin Group was formed as a central organization for three distinct businesses:

Sterling Retail Packaging focuses exclusively on products and services for retail and specialty stores.

Sterling Consumer Packaging focuses on folding cartons for consumer products, especially regional brands and private labels.

Jeannette Paper Company provides a one-stop-shop for all packaging and shipping supplies for manufacturers.

Together, the companies of The Ruskin Group provide the widest range of packaging products and services at the lowest total costs.
